Research Computing houses various types of hardware, configured to work together to help with any intense computation. The different interconnects provide different advantages depending on the type of computation being performed. Some algorithms may perform better when utilizing a single NUMA machine compared to Gigabit Ethernet or even Myrinet or InfiniBand nodes. Factors such as this should be taken into account when determining the type and number of nodes to run a computation on.
