Description

Xming is an Xserver for Win32 clients which allows remote graphical applications to be utilized on a Windows host without a lot of complicated setup. It utilizes X11 forwarding to accomplish this.

Installation

Follow the steps below to download and install Xming for Windows. Most users will want to install with PuTTY so the sections on OpenSSH can be ignored.

  • Note: If you are running Fluent's Gambit, please make sure you follow the instructions to install OpenSSH, otherwise you will not be able to run the program correctly.

Xming Directions

  1. Click here to download the Xming setup.
  2. Double click on the icon labeled "xming-setup."
  3. Click next on the introduction screen.
  4. Click next on the screen prompting you for which directory you wish to install in (note: the default is recommended).
  5. Make sure "Full Installation" is selected, and click next again.
  6. Click next when it asks where to install start menu shortcuts.
  7. Make sure "Associate Xlaunch.exe with the .xlaunch file extension" checkbox is selected, and click next.
  8. Click Install on the summary page.

This should work with the standard SSH client as long as you enable "X11 Tunneling" under the Edit->Settings... menu. The appropriate option is under Profile Settings->Tunneling. You can the check "Tunnel X11 connections" to enable this feature.

You can then launch Xming by double-clicking the desktop icon. Now, any SSH connection you make to Circe will allow you to display graphical applications on your work station.

You can download the SSH client from here:  https://rc.usf.edu/isos/SSH/sshsecureshellclient-3.2.9.exe You will be required to enter your NetID and password in order to proceed with the download.

Using PuTTY

These instructions are for users who wish to use PuTTY.

  1. Click here to download the Putty utility set.
  2. Double click on the icon labeled "pputty-setup.exe"
  3. Click next on the introduction screen.
  4. Click next on the screen prompting you for which directory you wish to install in (note: the default is recommended).
  5. Click next when it asks where to install start menu shortcuts.
  6. Click next when it asks you to select additional tasks.
  7. Click Install on the summary page.

Install OpenSSH for Windows

This is for applications which require Trusted X11 support such as Fluent's Gambit

  1. Download the OpenSSH 3.81 installer from here
  2. Double-click on the file to open the archive extractor and then double-click setupssh.exe to start the installation
  3. Accept all of the default values and complete the installer by clicking next.

Configure an Xlaunch file

  1. Go to Start -> Programs -> Xming > Xlaunch
  2. On the first screen, select "Multiple Windows." This will make the remote application forwarding more like a normal windows application.
  3. On the next screen, it will ask how to start Xming. Select the "start a program" radio button, and click next.
  4. Where it says "Start Program", type the name of the program you wish to start when you select the Xlaunch icon. If you wish to use this as a generic starting point for remote applications on the cluster, you may want to use /bin/bash --login -c /usr/bin/xterm , as executing commands from within it will automatically forward those window as well. Gnome-Terminal is not yet supported at this time.

With PuTTY

  1. In the dialog that says "Run Remote", select "Using PuTTY (plink.exe)". This will allow integration with the Portable Putty utility set you previously installed.
  2. In the box that says "Connect to computer", type the hostname of the server you wish to connect to. See Connecting to Circe for login details for the Circe cluster.
  3. In the box that says "Login as user", enter your netid.
  4. Leave the password box blank, and click next.
  5. Click next on the next screen.
  6. Click the "Save Configuration" button on the next screen, and save the Xlaunch shortcut in an easily accessable location (such as your Desktop).

With OpenSSH

  1. In the dialog that says "Run Remote", select "Using SSH (ssh.exe). This will allow integration with your OpenSSH installation.
  2. In the box that says "Connect to computer", type the hostname of the server you wish to connect to. See Connecting to Circe for login details for the Circe cluster.
  3. In the box that says "Login as user", enter your username.
  4. Leave the password box blank, and click next.
  5. A file selector dialog will open to find the executable for ssh.exe. You will need to select the file C:\Program Files\OpenSSH\bin\ssh.exe and click 'Open'
  6. On the next screen, add -Y to the field that says Additional parameters for PuTTY or SSH and click 'Next'
  7. Click the "Save Configuration" button on the next screen, and save the Xlaunch shortcut in an easily accessable location (such as your Desktop).

You should be able to double-click on the created .xlaunch file to connect to the system. You'll need to provide your password when you log in.
